Preparations for the event ‘Walk for Clean Air’

EkoSkola…the whole school is in it… Together!  That is our Vision.  The EkoSkola Student Council at Gozo College Sannat Primary and Special Unit is at the front line proposing ways of how to reduce our carbon footprint and bring ideas forward.  When discussing and planning the EkoSkola action plan at the beginning of the year, the EkoSkola Student Council proposed an Activity for the WHOLE school AND Community:  ‘Walk for Clean Air’. The year 4 classes with their class teachers and LSAS, wrote a Notice as part of their writing task.  This is part of their literacy curriculum with the beauty they are actually writing a Notice within a context, which is that of informing their fellow students of this Event. Every morning assembly, 2 notices by year 4 students are being read as reminders, one in Maltese and another in English. Then, the year 5 class wrote the invitation to parents as part of their Writing Task which was then distributed to all the school students.  We are now reaching the date Friday 5th May. A coach is being used to take us to walk a trail from Ghasri to Marsalforn and then return back to Sannat.  This walk is being organised in collaboration with the EcoGozo Outdoor Activity Teachers.  Be the change.  Take Action. Walk for Clean Air

Walk for Clean Air: Another successful event organised by the Gozo College Activity unit in collaboration with Ms. Dianne Angie Portelli. Evening / Night walk with Sannat and St. Lawrence primary school pupils accompanied by parents, teachers and relatives. The contingent of around 120 people left from Ghasri village square proceeding towards Tal-Patruncinju Chapel and all the way down to Marsalforn. Well done to all and looking forward for the next.

Installation of bicycle racks

Have you ever heard the song ‘Bicycle Race’ by the British rock band Queen? It goes like this, “I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike”. The EkoSko…la Student Council at Gozo College Sannat Primary School and Special Unit proudly announces a new set of bicycle racks just installed on the school premises. This idea sprouted after they conducted a School Audit where we asked all students, including Kinder, to find out how we students get to school. The committee met on several occasions during our midday break to discuss ways and brainstorm ideas of how to ‘Reduce our Carbon Footprint’, which is also the Slogan chosen for this year’s EkoSkola Noticeboard. From the results of this Audit, they quickly realised that only the very few come on foot or use a bicycle. The committee were overjoyed when the School Management team agreed to their proposal to have bicycle racks installed. On Friday 28th April 2017, their dream became reality! Be the Change. Take Action. Let’s reduce our carbon footprint. Walk or cycle to school. Well done to all those involved!

“Fi, Fa, Fo. Hurry down the beanstalk Jack!” Students with Special Needs at the Gozo College Special Unit, Sannat Primary together with their teachers and LSAs made use of recyclable material to help Jack climb up to the Beanstalk to go to the giant’s castle. Aircondition foam insulation, left over foam and cardboard boxes came in handy when creating this amazing work. The theme for this was inspired by the story Jack and the Beanstalk and was done as an activity for World Book Day.
Excellent use of cardboard boxes. Well done to all involved!

Our Fountain of Friendship

‘Collaborative Green Fingers’ at the Gozo College Sannat Primary and Special Unit! Students, the PSCD teacher, the Year 1 class teacher, SMT and the gardener joined forces to do this cross curricular activity entitled “Our Fountain of Friendship”. This activity was inspired by a story “Il-Prinċipessa u l-Fjura” a story found in a booklet entitled “Stejjer Ekoloġiċi” by Mr Dunstan Hamilton.

During PSCD lesson, the students took an active role in the story about a lonely flower and a princess who helped, by planting many lovely flowers next to it. During circle time Friendship, Feelings and Relationships were discussed. As a Follow Up, students drew Insect Crafts to decorate our “Fountain Of Friendship”. An unused fountain bowl was transformed to be reused as a pot. This activity provided students with gardening opportunities to enhance their skills and boost their development. The direct benefits of gardening for children are many. Mentioning a few, it improves physical and mental well-being, builds life skills such as confidence and communication and encourages a healthier lifestyle. This hands-on activity also teaches about environment and sustainability. When students were waiting their turns to plant, they enjoyed observing and discussing various beneficial insects that came visiting “Our Fountain of Friendship”. It also helped our students to engage better with their surroundings and develop a sense of responsibility. This activity is another initiative found in the Gozo College Sannat Primary and Special Unit EkoSkola Action Plan.

Second Green Flag Award for our school

Our EkoSkola President and member, Gianni Zarb and Neil Mizzi respectively, attended The Green Flag and LEAF Award Ceremony presided by the President of Malta Dr Marie Louise Coleiro Preca at The President’s Palace, Valletta. Apart from receiving the 2nd Green Flag Award for our school, Neil, Gianni and another girl from Victoria Primary were chosen to give the President a donation of €200 on behalf of all the schools participating in EkoSkola. After the President’s Speech, Neil read a short message to the President, while Gianni and the other girl gave the envelope containing the donation to the President.
