DEALING WITH AUTISM IN GOZO 2 – TRAINING IN THE UK 9th – 13th SEPTEMBER 2019

As part of the Erasmus + Project Dealing with Autism in Gozo 2, the Head of School, Assistant Head, 2 teachers and an LSE from Sannat Primary & Special Unit attended a week training in the United Kingdom on ‘Children with additional needs and their associated behaviours.’ The workshop was delivered by Ms Honor Coombs from Concept Training. The course focused on strategies on how to deal with behaviour issues for children with ASD. They also had the opportunity to do some job shadowing and observe such practices in action at Pendle View Primary School in Colne, Lancashire.

TNT ERASMUS+ PROJECT – VISIT TO LATVIA 5TH TO 12TH MAY 2019

The third transnational meeting was held in Riga between the 6th and 10th May 2019. Assistant head Ms Victoria Cassar and teachers Ms Joanne Sultana and Ms Karen Attard participated in these meetings. These meetings focused on evaluating the work done during the course of this project as well as the participation of each partner school to prepare the TNT Guidebook and the final report. Year 5 students Meagan Vella and Hailey Ballucci stayed with a host family. It was an amazing experience for them. They had a taste of how students and families from a different culture spend their days at school and at home. At school, they joined lessons and activities and also went on a day trip to the the ethnographic open-air museum of Latvia and Laima Chocolate factory museum. At home with the host family, they played games, watched TV (particularly a game of Hockey and supported the Latvian team), joined the family during training at the local swimming pool, went to the zoo and visited the Old City of Riga.

TNT ERASMUS+ PROJECT – VISIT TO GERMANY 17TH TO 23RD mARCH 2019

Between the 17th and 23rd of March 2019, four year 6 students had amazing experience in Steinheid, Germany as part of the Erasmus+ Programme TNT (Together Now for Tomorrow). Our delegation was formed by two class teachers, Mr Philip Cachia and Mr Mario Mifsud together with four Year 6 students, Lara Cauchi, Maya Muscat, Nathan Pace and Joseph Cordina. The whole group attended the Staatliche Grundschule Steinheid school where children and teachers participated in lessons and other activities organised by the school. The group also had the opportunity to visit the city of Erfurt. They were also joined by teachers and students from Portugal, Latvia, Netherlands and Finland.

TNT erasmus+ project – visit to Portugal 18th to 25th November 2018

Between the 18th and 25th of November, 2018, four Year 6 students had an unforgettable experience in Braga, Portugal as part of the Erasmus+ Programme TNT (Together Now for Tomorrow). Mireille Buttigieg, Mikela Attard, Neil Mizzi and Pietro Augustinas were accompanied by the Assistant Head Ms Victoria Cassar and one of our teachers Ms Nadia Cremona. The whole group attended Escola Basica Dr Francisco Sanches and participated in lessons and activities carried out in the Portuguese school throughout the whole week. They also visited interesting places such as Bom Jesus, Porto and Barcelos. They were joined by teachers and students from Finland, Germany, Latvia and the Netherlands.

TNT Erasmus+ project – Visit to the Netherlands 15th-19th October 2018

Asst Head Mr Joseph DeBrincat and class teacher Mr Charles Bajada represented our school during transnational project meetings held in the Netherlands as part of the TNT (Together Now for Tomorrow) Erasmus+ project. These meetings took place between the 15th and 19th October 2018. They also had the opportunity to see how the Peer-Mediation System works in two different schools (Deventer and Leerdam). They were given hints on how they can start using this system in their own school in order to:

  1. Curb instances of bullying
  2. Empower students to be able to face conflict and resolve it
  3. Enhance students’ self-esteem
  4. Develop an attitude of tolerance for different cultures, religions, sexual orientation and intellectual diversity

This will help in promoting harmony in tomorrow’s Europe.

Dealing with Autism in Gozo – Closing Seminar

Parents and professionals voiced their opinions about the work that is being done in Gozo in favour of persons with autsim during the closing seminar of the Erasmus+ project Dealing with Autism in Gozo. The comments about the result of this project were extremely positive and all agreed that it has brought about change in the way we are teaching students with autism. The way forward was also discussed.
